Hello from Denny

Submitted by Denny on

I just had to share this email I received from my sister, Cathy:

well - did i tell you about midnight oils new advertising campaign - driving vans around sydney city advertising their album - eg. given peter garrett is head of the Australian Conservation foundation it is pretty crap. i emailed their promotions company to ask why they are using that non-environmentally friendly method and suggested they may as well stick some signs on logging trucks and whaling boats:

here is their managers response...

Cathy,

You are obviously not a fan. You obviously are extreme when it comes to judging others. You obviously don't drive a car, fly in planes, turn on power points, eat meat, wear leather shoes, eat at Macdonalds, drink Coca Cola, have a fridge, or know anything about sustainable and renewable use of resources.

We live in the 21st century and are endeavoring to suggest to the greater part of humanity a change for the better is a continued process.

But then again every generation has it's flat Earther's. Try and join a reasonable group of self realized imperfect humans for some decent peer analysis.

Gary Morris

so here is my response to that:...

Actually Gary, as of this moment I am no longer a fan. Nor are my friends who, like me, attempt to reduce their consumption of non-renewable energy by choosing environmentally friendly ways of doing things when they are available.

Thank you for your reply.

Cathy Liggins

so since then I have emailed JJJ & The Big Issue. it so sucks - jonno (boyfriend) sent a good email to him too:

Gary,

Cathy was kind enough to forward me your reply to her email expressing her disappointment that Midnight Oil would choose to use advertising on vehicles that are on the road merely to advertise Midnight Oil's new album.

It's a simple argument. Midnight Oil is unnecessarily contributing significantly to noise and air pollution and to road traffic by using this advertising method.

You say "[you] are endeavoring to suggest to the greater part of humanity a change for the better is a continued process". Why then do you choose a new method of advertising, where vehicles are on the road _solely_ to promote your product, which is clearly a change for the worse.

Perhaps up there in your ivory tower you can't smell the fumes, hear the noise, or suffer the smog and congestion that is being abetted by your promotional techniques. But down here in the real world it's making a difference and it's a continued change for the worse.

Finally, spare us your thesaurus-driven high school debating team accusations. Perhaps if this issue weren't such a sensitive one given Midnight Oil's huge store of goodwill built on environmental responsibility you would be concerned enough to consider the matter seriously.

anyway - thats all.

Midnight Oil have suddenly turned into a bunch of wankers. Or more likely their advertising execs have. Oh, wait, you have to be a wanker to be an advertising exec anyway...

Hope TripleJ pick it up anyway.
