Bit of a DIY emergency yesterday. Anyone who knows me knows that I suck at DIY stuff. Drills, ladders, hammers and nails are all scary things to me. So it was with some trepidation that we purchased a large, heavy mirror for the lounge on the weekend. I didn't even really think about it at purchase time, but of course being the only person with two fully operational legs, I'd have to be the one to hang it. Oh, shit.
No worries, we headed off to the hardware store yesterday and purchased some bloody large screws and a stud finder. Back home and the first thing I had to do was test the stud finder on myself. Studness confirmed.
So then I set about measuring and marking and re-marking where I was going to put the mirror. Checked where the studs were in the wall. Measured and checked again. Remeasured. Checked the studs were in the right place. Measured and checked and rechecked and just to be sure I checked again.
And then I drilled. They're big screws, so I was drilling big holes. Success! The first drill hit the stud and I was happy. I drilled the second hole... into plasterboard only. Fuck! This is why I hate DIY! I'd done everything right and still I cocked it up.
After standing there staring at it for about 15 minutes I decided that maybe the studfinder wasn't 100% accurate and moved my drill hole over 5mm. I thought well if I've buggered it up totally one more gaping hole won't matter. Thankfully, this drill hole hit the stud.
After a little bit of work by Sarah on the mirror's hooks to move them apart, the mirror was hung! And the spare hole is just sitting there behind the mirror, so I don't have to worry about it.
So yes, I still suck at DIY but we got there in the end.
Sarah's back at work today, still with her pink cast on. I hope her workmates are looking after her!
