Hello all,
Tim has been quite slack of late, and we've had some complaints, so I thought I better write one while he's out buying our tea.
Note: After being laughed at repeatedly for the way I say things on the telephone (thanks Sallee) I have decided to define some of the terms used in my update, just in case.
We are having takeaways tonight, but it's well deserved as we spent the day at Piha learning to surf. A few weeks ago we talked about going to Thailand for a holiday, but we changed our minds to save money and because we weren't sure what was happening with Tim's new contract. Our new plan was to take a couple of surf school trips, much cheaper and something I've always wanted to do.
I was quite nervous that we'd get some cowabunga*, but Judd and his girlfriend picked us up and they were really nice, down to earth people, so I stopped worrying about everything. We picked up 4 more people, some Brits who had gone out yesterday as well, and 3 out of the 4 had managed to stand up on their boards.
We got out to Piha and it was a pretty miserable looking day, and apparently the surf was fairly difficult because we had an onshore wind messing them all up. Tim managed to get up on his first or second go, lucky bastard. I wasn't quite so tinny**, but by the end of the day I had managed to stand up and "surf" a couple of waves. The hardest bit is picking the right wave, and paddling hard enough to get enough in front of it. Anyway, what a fantastic day, we're looking forward to next weekend for our next lesson. It's not really a full on lesson though, more just peace of mind and tips, as Piha is quite an intense surfing beach with all the rocks and strong currents & rips. I must stress how much of a legend Tim is at surfing, I reckon by next week he'll be getting up every wave.
Anyway, the second reason this post is called "surfing safari" is because I'm using Safari (internet browser for Macs) to surf to tjharman.com, because I bought a MacBook!!!!! The important part is that I have a lovely new, small, easy to use, sexy looking computer, and it's MINE. Even Tim is jealous - it's pretty awesome and I was online within about 5 minutes of opening the (very cool) box. I LOVE it, and I'm trying not to think about that fact that I'm supposed to be saving money instead of spending it...
In other news, Chirpus is doing well, eating his pellets up now. We weighed him and he's lost a little bit of weight, so hopefully we can get that back up again. As I write this he's munching away on them, it's like he's forgotten entirely about how ravenous he used to be over sunflower seeds (the "Big Macs" of bird cuisine apparently).
Speaking of cuisine, it's time to dig in to our Melt. Well earned I think, after all that surfing today.
*A cowabunga is someone who is ultra too-cool at trendy sports. Mainly snowboarding and surfing attract cowabungas. You can identify them as the people driving the cool 4WD and wearing labels you have never heard of, but can tell costs more than 5 times what you are wearing, which seemed like a lot.
**Tinny = lucky. Comes from tin-arse. A lucky bugger.
