Wet Weekend, Lookout, Icecreams, Legos

Submitted by TiM on

Pretty miserable weekend just gone, looks like Winter is really starting to set in.  Auckland had floods and roads closed and all those sorts of fun things.  Theo had a big day in Amici on Friday, Sarah said that on Friday morning he was saying he didn't want to go to Amici he wanted to go back to Vita and he wanted to take Big Bae with him.  Oh dear.  I think it's just a bit harder for him, with so much more to do and the ratio of kids is about 1 teacher to 8 vs Vita where it was 1:4.

Saturday morning I made them pancakes as promised, it's become a real thing now.  They ask if it's the weekend yet and if the answer is yes then pancakes are demanded.  I don't mind, I've gotten pretty quick at making them now, I can have them whipped up in about 5 minutes, it used to take me about 15 before as I fiddled around trying to remember everything.  Once breakfast was over I set Beth up on the couch watching the Snerfs (Smurfs) movie with Hermit (Kermit the Frog) while I took Theo back to swimming, the first lesson of the new term.  I'm a bit annoyed with swimming now, the (not exactly large in the first place) pool is now split into three sections instead of two.  That will mean when there's 5 kids in our class we're really going to struggle not to bump into each other, it was hard enough before with half a pool but now it'll be impossible with only a third.

Anyway I didn't think Theo would be that great given that it was the first lesson back after a 3 week break, but man he was excellent!  Jill was really surprised, totally happy with going under most of the time, happy to put his head in the water and "look at Daddy" swimming down below him.  He floated on his back and jumped off the mat all by himself, stuff that before he really had to be talked into doing and then would only do once before loudly announcing to anyone that would listen that "I don't want to do that anymore"

After swimming I went home to see how Beth was, and to check on Sarah (oh I haven't mentioned yet, she was crook with a bad stomach bug).  Then I took the two ratbags out to the playground in town, next to the bikepark for a while.  40 minutes in Beth spied a child with an icecream and of course remembered that Lick This was just down the road so then there was harping on every 5 minutes about can we get an icecream.  So we walked up to Lick This and got icecreams.  I asked Beth what she wanted and she said Chocolate and I asked Theo and he said Banana!  I wasn't really expecting Theo to answer, but he did and he was really happy with his Banana icecream, as Beth was with hers.  I had Pineapple Lump which is also very tasty.  Then we went back down to the playground and I pushed them on the swings for about 20 minutes until I got tired of that and then made them run around by themselves for a bit.  Once it looked like it was about to pour with rain we jumped in the car and went to visit Steve at Donut Robot, grabbing a few donuts and sitting on the grass and having a chat to Steve too.  He suggested if we were bored to go up the Napier Lookout and I realised I hadn't been up there in AGES so we drove up there.

Beth and Theo loved it, not so much because of the view but because there's a little lookout hut thing up there, with no roof. We played around in that for a bit, trying to get out of the howling gale that was coming up and over the cliff face (Click on the photo so it's big, then press the Motion arrow top right corner to see Beth's hair going!).  Then we headed home and everyone watched a bit of TV before bedtime.

Sunday was even more miserable from a weather point of view, so we zipped into town to take Granny's phone back to Noel Leeming.  That went OK the last few minutes when they decided to have a fight with each other in front of the large HD TV display.  I was worried someone was going to push someone else over and into the TV but thankfully that didn't happen.  I had a bit of a crab at them and then took them to Mitre 10 to buy a hose and to let them play in the playground for 30 minutes while I pretended to get a bit of peace and quiet but instead of course had to help a child up the ladder, down the ladder, go to the toilet etc.  Then we left and got a couple of sausages from the Saussie Sizzle for the drive home.  At home I realised Theo wasn't actually aware the napkin holding the sausage isn't supposed to be eaten too. He didn't seem to mind.

Once home they both claimed to be tired and to want a sleep, but 15 minutes later both also announced they'd "Had enough sleeping" so we took them out to Brave Brewing to get some lunch and fill up my beer flaggons, then went to The Warehouse to get them a couple of leg packs each.  Then we went home, lit the fire and Sarah and I each helped one of them build their lego, which they both had a great time playing with.

Then off to bed for everyone, and here we are today!  They have just started annoying as all hell roadworks outside the office, concert grinding and all that sort of stuff.  Joy.  Supposed to go for 3 months too, I don't understand because they only dug up all the road about a year ago.  Oh well, dig it up again council, dig it up again.

Oh yea, bonus video recorded this morning with Beth and Theo on the couch at 6:45am.
