NZNOG 2022

Submitted by TiM on

Last Monday night I went for a walk, it was super foggy.  You could hardly see a meter in front, my super bright torch was actually useless because all you'd get is the light bouncing back when you turned it on, making things seem even worse.  It was quite eerie taking Biscuit for a walk, it was a full moon as well so the whole area seemed lit up when I was walking along the walking track.  Like being in a really huge warehouse with a dim light overhead.  I took some photos with the Pixel Nightsight feature but they don't really do how cool it was justice.  Biscuit didn't care, he still ran around and had a great time.  When I got home I was sopping wet, all the mist had been slowly collecting on my clothes.

Tuesday was a normal day, both kids seemed much better so off to school they went.  Hooray.  Wednesday I got up bright and early and Grant came and collected me in the NOW car (a decent one), then we went and collected Greg from Havelock North and drove down to Wellington.  We got there about 9:30am which was good, our TICSA conference wasn't due to start until 10am so that worked our perfectly.  We didn't really learn a lot we didn't already know, the most depressing part of it was the doom and gloom around the Global supply chain.  Which we sort of knew anyway but it was nice/depressing to have it all clearly spelt out to us.  Great.

Then I had lunch with Dylan Hall, an old workmate from ages ago.  So nice to see Dylan again, wish we'd had more time to catchup but I had to go and find Grant again and head out to see our customer Resene at their paint factory.  We meet up with the Resene guy which is how I came to have my first ever ride in a Tesla.  It was only from the front carpark to the back carpark, so not exactly an amazing experience but still.  First even Telstra ride - TICK!

Then we headed back into town, had a break for 30 minutes before heading back off to the NZNOG Welcome Drinks thing.  That was good, great to see a bunch of people I haven't see in ages and meet a few faces that I've worked with at Spark but never actually met.

Thursday morning Nokia took us out for Breakfast, then we had the conference all day.  Then Thursday night was the dinner and drinks which was also good fun, again got to talk to lots of people I haven't seen in ages. Friday morning Juniper took us out for breakfast then it was day two of the conference.  Suffice to say I was a bit tired after the night before, we certainly had a few beers at the dinner.  Though we didn't kick on until 2am like some people apparently did.  Those people unsurprisingly weren't at the conference at 9am when it kicked off...

We left the conference at 3pm so that we could make it home at a decent time, so we got home about 8pm.  It seemed like it was midnight to my brain, tired after 2 long days.  But it was good fun and worthwhile.  The kids were at Peter and Mary's for the night, Sarah went out with Holly for dinner and some drinks but arrived home about 2 minutes after me.

Saturday I went and collected my bike from the bike shop. It's been making lots of odd clunking noises lately, really bad when I peddle.  Plus the pedels felt uneven. So I took it into the bike shop before I went away and asked them nicely if they could look at it while I was away at NZNOG.  Anyway they gave me  call to say I'd worn out the bearings in the pedals!  That's the 3rd thing I've work on it, I've also been through two cassettes on the back (that's the thing with all the gears/spikes on it on the back wheel).  Anyway it has done just over 6,000km so I guess it's not that surprising that bits wear out on it.  Now it's fixed it rides SO much better than it did.  Once the bike was collected and returned home we went out for breakfast because the kids were still with P&M and they took them to their swimming classes.  So we had breakfast at Milk and Honey which was nice.  Then we collected the kids on the way home, I did some housework around the place (mostly gardening) and inspected the work that's been done around the pool since I was away.  Mostly just electrical work and some flattening/leveling of all the soil around the place ready for the fencing to go in (hopefully this week!)

Sunday we didn't do a real lot - just took it easy.  Theo's friend Bowden came over for a playdate, they played outside for an hour, then played iPads for a couple of hours, then I took them (and Beth) to Anderson Park dropping Bowden back home on the way.  Then dinner and bed!

Now it's Monday morning and it's off to work I go hi ho.
