Beth's Eyesight

Submitted by TiM on

Beth's has had 3 eye tests done now, two at kindy and one yesterday at the optometrist.  They have all shown that her right eye is a little bit weaker than her left (or maybe the other way?) and so there's a good chance that she will need to get glasses to help with long distance.  Not really surprising I guess, given her parents are both glasses wearers.  In fact I went to the optometrist on Monday morning myself and they said that my eyesight hasn't changed, but one of my optic nerves was a bit thinner than the others and the pressure in that eye was a bit higher.  So I had to have a peripheral vision test (just an extra $15, sir) but that turned out fine.  I don't have glaucoma just yet.

So yes, Beth has to go back next week for one final check, this time Sarah has to put some drops in her eye beforehand.  The optometrist when testing her yesterday was very impressed that she could read the numbers on the colourblind test properly, 22, 64, 34 etc.

So that's a bit sad really, that she might need glasses at such a young age.  Hopefully this test she has next week might show they're not necessary, but the 3 tests she's had prior have all had the same result.  Which apparently quite often doesn't happen in young children because they squint to read when they're not supposed to etc etc, or say they can't read things when they can.

Theo's language is coming along in leaps and bounds.  Yesterday Beth drew him a picture and he said to her "This is a beautiful picture Beth, thank you for drawing it for me" which was very cute.

Have still been fighting with my new home network solution.  Works great apart from the random power offs.  My last ditch attempt to fix it is to replace the power supply with a really high quality one, and to remove the surge protector I'd put inline to protect everything.  I did a bit of reading and turns out the $5 surge protectors you can buy are basically snake oil, they do next to nothing and can in fact malfunction and cause the issue I've seen seeing.  It's still a bit of a straw clutch, but I'm hoping one of those two things will mean the end of random power offs.  The first 3 weren't a problem, but it died the other day in the middle of Sarah doing work on a video call.  Pretty much the worst time for it to happen.  It's still running now, but if it dies again I'm out of ideas apart from returning it to the Chinese people I bought it from, who I am sure won't want it back.  Fingers crossed.

Couple of things I forgot from last week: Friday we got the car's radiator repaired.  Stupid car, the WoF this time around cost us $1500!  At least it was fine to drive to Danniverke.

And also we bought the kids another couple of (robotic!) hamsters last week, Sundae and Scoops.  Though Theo calls his Scoopie.  Of course they're tiny so they get lost all the time.  But they were $5 each.  I only bought one for Theo (Beth already had a couple) and Sarah reminded me, hello we have two children, let's not deal with the utter meltdown when only one child gets a new one, especially for $5.  Good point.
