Allergic Dog - Theo's Soccer Game

Submitted by TiM on

I had to walk late last Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, so I knocked off early and I took Biscuit for a run in at Anderson Park.  But we'd only be there 5 minutes and I threw his Frisbee and instead of chasing it like he usually does, he sat down and started licking at his rear paw.  Then walking on it, he was limping a little bit.  Oh bugger.  So I stopped that and instead went back home.  I tried to have a look at his paws but I couldn't really see much, one did seem to be a bit red though (The sore one) so I thought maybe I'd better just take him to the vet the next day anyway.  We also noticed he wasn't his usual self, very calm and relaxed way too much, when he's usually dialled up to fullscale bonkers during a normal day.

So off to the Vet I went on Tuesday afternoon (I stayed home all day, the night work on the PRNC was successful, but it didn't finish up until about 3am so my sleep was broken) and got the diagnosis.  I was expecting a grass seed stuck in his paw, or an infection, or both.  But the Vet said he was probably allergic to something, given how inflamed his paws were.  Dog can get allergic to things, like GRASS.  HE'S A DOG.  And he might be allergic to grass.  Anyway $270 later after I nearly died at the EFTPOS terminal he now has special shampoo to wash him and also allergy pills.  Allergy pills. For a DOG.  Biscuit has them.

It was Theo's first game of Soccer on Saturday.  Sarah bought him shinpads and stuff on Friday and boy oh boy was he excited.  Saturday morning came around and he was ready to play.  Sadly his enthusiasm didn't translate to on-field prowess, he was a little scared of getting right into the action, instead opting to run most of the time a few metres away from where the players and the ball were.  And there was some tears, because he felt like he wasn't getting a fair share of the ball, which was probably true but only because he was getting in to find it!  Anyway, he had a good time, Grandma and the Mooneys came to watch which was nice of them.  We'll do some training in the yard this week to try and get him less scared of the ball and keener to muck in and have a go next Saturday.

Saturday afternoon we played family Monopoly.  Theo Moneybags won.  He's so funny at it, when he's got hardly any money it's nearly teras and when he's got heaps of money he's "Look at ALL. MY. MONEY!".

My Powerfinger One Night Lonely T-Shirt arrived this week.  I'm pretty happy, it's the first (and will probably be the only) Virtual Gig T-Shirt I own!  I mean I don't own heaps of band T-Shirts or anything (though I have a couple of The Chats) but this is a nice T-Shirt and it was supporting a good cause.  Plus they're all sold out (I bought mine on the night while the concert was in full swing) because I think they were pretty limited edition.  Anyway, it's nice, I'm happy.

Went to Holly and Adrian's last night to see their new kitchen, and have a nice meal and hang out.  We played a fair bit of Balderdash which was quite good fun.  Sarah's answer to "What happened in July 1982" which was "NASA sent a pair of Parrots into Orbit" had us all in stitches.  Possibly also the Tequlia and beer we'd all drunk might have had some influence on the laughter too.  Anyway we got an Uber home, the kids thought it was pretty interesting and weren't quite sure why we weren't just driving our own car home.

I've been trying to get back into running, my new Garmin watch has a coach on it and my goal is to get my 5km time down to ~25minutes.  Which is a lofty goal but hey, might as well try.  When I started ~5 weeks ago I totally and utterly buggered my back for ~1-2 weeks, no idea what I did but it just started to kill, my lower back.  Anyway so I've been doing no exercise (apart from riding my bike to/from work each day) for the last 4 weeks, so I have been getting back into the running very slowly.  But it seems to be going OK, I even jogged the 3km from ours to Holly and Adrian's to collect the car this morning and did pretty well then.  My Garmin training plan is ~8 weeks, so be keen to see what time I can get for a 5km. My current Parkrun record is 26:45 so I want to shave a minute 45 off that.  Should be possible!

I think that's it for this week... Lots of other boring things like I haven't manage to get our fridge out to replace it's water filter.  Age was over a couple of weeks ago and just lifted it out like it was candy.  I'd break my back in 6 places if I tried what he did.  Backyard renno is probably going to start in the next 3-4 weeks.  Theo's having a trial school day on Tuesday.  Work is busy.  One of my Intel NUCs keeps crashing and I'm trying to figure out why.  Where I mended the roof gutter last week isn't leaking, but 1m to the left of it is now, damnit.  Home ownership, it's a bitch.

Ok I really think that's it with all the little boring crap written down too.
