Night Out / Cheerleading (Want a Fight?) / Bike Repairs

Submitted by TiM on

We went to Beth's Cheerleading display yesterday afternoon.  This year the proper competition is in Auckland and Sarah and Beth are going up for it then.  Yesterday was the show for everyone to see what they've been up to and fundraising for the club.  We got there nice and early so we mangaged to get a good seat right up the front.  Sarah had spent the morning with Beth getting her makeup done, eyeliner, mascara, false lashes and bright pink lipstick.  All part of the cheerleading requirements.  I said to Sarah how silly it seems given the focus is on the cheerleading aspect, not what they look like, but she rightly pointed out that Theatre is the same, you have to put on overly expressive makeup so that you clearly stand out under lights.  After a lot of work upstairs Beth was ready!

So yes we got a seat right up front and waited for the show to start.  Theo wanted to play on the bouncy castle so off he went, he got bored of reading his book pretty quickly.  Finally after an hour or so it was time for The Cosmics to get up and do their performance.  Sadly Daddy's camera work was a bit shit here and I didn't move the camera over to the left where Beth goes, I was too busy watching her and not watching what I was recording.  I'm hoping the Cheereading person filming got it.  But you can see they put on a pretty awesome routine!

Beth was up first, so after that we watched the rest of the performers.  Theo wanted to go back out to the bouncy castle so no worries, but came back in 5 minutes later in tears.  We asked him what had happened and he kept saying he didn't want to explain.  Sarah eventually got out of him that he'd asked a litlte boy "Do you want a fight?" and the little boy had started to wrestle and grab/strangle him.  This had come as somewhat as a shock to Theo, that asking someone to fight him and then they fighting him happened!  "Well well well if it isn't the consequences of my own actions" Sarah and I kept saying to each other.  He was fine though, but a lesson well learnt hopefully!  Sarah and I couldn't stop laughing.

Saturday morning we took the kids to Tennis, both of them expressed a desire to "Do Tennis Again" this term that we signed them up for that.  It was very wet looking but thankfully the rain didn't kick in badly enough to stop the first day from going off without a hitch.  Both kids are in the older group now, Beth technically is supposed to be in the next session because she's 9 but they don't mind her being in the Junior Hotshots because she hasn't been for a year and is still learning.  They had a good time anyway, then we ducked into Origin (Through the way back which was interesting and not something we'll do again! I thought it was just down the hall but it was right through the kitchen and everything and all the staff stopped and looked at us, even though the baker had invited us in!) and got a snack, before heading off to Swimming.  Theo and I ducked home because they had forgotten their books to read at Swimming and Rhubarb the RoboVac was stuck on a chair and I wanted her to keep cleaning the house.

Saturday night we went out with Holly and Adrian to celebrate Holly's birthday, the kids got their favourite Babysitter Grace again.  We started out at Rogue Hop, then tried to get into the very cool cocktail bar Terresa, but it was full so we went to Mattise for a drink.  Then back down to Terresa for some very funky cocktails, I got the one with a huge smoke bubble on top of it.  Amazing.  Then we went up to Central Firestation Bistro for a lovely 3 course dinner.  I just pretended I wasn't on a diet for the evening, you've got to have some fun right?

Had to take my bike into the bike shop again on Thursday.  The gear cable for the big front wheel gear had snapped, so I'd spent the week peddling my little legs as fast as they could go because I didn't have big gear to switch into.  They laughed and told me it also needs a new chain, again, and they're amazed at how quickly I burn through the chains.  I told them I'm not exactly perfect at keeping the chain free of dirt and sand and grit and of course those all act like sandpaper when it comes to bike chains.  It also needs new tires now, but given it's had the current ones on it for ~2 years, I can't really complain about that very much.

Dad sent me his old noise cancelling headphones as a birthday present.  They're great.  They don't fully drown out the kids, but they're better than nothing :-)

The pool is, I think, finished?  The electrical work is all done and Espaso installed a new gate for us so I don't always have to walk the long way around to get to the pool shed.  It's great, it looks really good what they've done.  I will apply to get the pool inspector over this week or next to give us the signoff. Hooray.

That's all, it's Monday and it's time to get the house clean for the cleaner and get the kids packed up ready to go to school.  And somewhere in there find time to get myself ready to go to work.  Oh we we turned up the final 100G link between Hamilton and Vocus Parkhead on Friday.  So the 100G Ring is complete.  There's still a lot of work left to do, but the days of having to watch the network like a hawk and try to rebalance traffic all the time is, thankfully, over.  Hooray.  I won't miss those days.
