It's Sunday morning and it's raining. It's been raining all night. It rained pretty much all yesterday. Beth's friend Daisy is here and the girls don't really know what to do, they're bored. I told them they could go and stand out in the rain, but they weren't a huge fan of that suggestion.
So last Sunday was the big cheerleading comp! I went down and got coffee for Sarah and I from the local cafe again, then Sarah got Beth all dressed up in all her cheerleading gear. My contant background fear that we'd forgotten some part of her cheerleading costume turned out to be unfounded (of course) and so we headed off to the event. It was super packet with people everywhere, it was hard to get a park. I dropped everyone off and then went back home to get the water bottles we'd left behind. Then back to the event, parked the car and went inside. It took ages for Beth's team to come out and perform, but eventually they did and did a great job. Though Beth didn't manage to get her leg hold heel stretch up. Which once the performance was over she was utterly devastated about, in tears, beside herself. The thing was though, re-watching the performance there was no way she could have as her supporting base didn't get her in the right position etc to do it! Still that didn't help her with how she felt though, the coach had to spend 2-3 minutes with her talking her down off a ledge. As far as we were concerned though she'd done an amazing job, she'd nailed all her individual bits she had to do, she was very impressive.
The event over, we went back to our little AirBNB. I made myself useful and cleaned out the Air Conditioner filter which was disgusting with black mould and dust caked into it. Ugh. No wonder the unit had an underlying stink to it. Then we headed back to the venue for the prize giving. When Beth's division was called out, Beth's group came first place! Which it must be admitted was assisted by the fact her group was on the only group in her division. So they couldn't lose. Stil it was great for them, they all got medal and were all super happy at the end of it, Beth was thrilled, the worry and sadness over the heel stretch long forgotten. So that was nice.
For dinner we had Burgerfuel and all went to bed pooped!
Monday we got up and packed up the little house, I went and got coffees. Then we drove in to Wellington Zoo, pretty much on the other side of town from where the house was. We had a great time at the zoo, when we arrived it was a lovely Wellington day, Sunny, little wind. We saw all sorts of cool animals, I'm not going to try and list them all here. By the time we left though it had started raining. We were there for a couple of hours though and had a great time.
Then we drove home, it was a fairly uneventful drive.
And funnily enough, I now work for Mercury. Or at least, I soon will. It started on Wednesday when Greg and Paul B sat me down in a spare meeting room. I was thinking "Oh shit here comes the 'We're having a restructure'" discussion. But it wasn't, Paul B came out with it straight away which was "We want to offer you a job with Mercury". I got the offer details later that night via email. I sat down with Greg the next day, I wanted to know if he had seen this coming, and he said yea he's had a couple of weeks already to process it, it wasn't a surprise etc, he'd been through the 4 stages of grief already. Wednesday night the official offer documents came through, Thursday I signed them all and handed in my resignation letter to Greg.
From a work point of view, not a real lot will change. I'll still be doing NOW work, just as a Mercury employee. It's the right move, NOW's network is only going to shrink and Mercury is only going to get bigger and bigger. So it's a great move from that point of view. I do feel like I'm abandoning Greg/NOW a little bit, but did talk to him about all that and he assured me I was doing the right thing etc. So I hope I am. Told all my workmates on Friday, Hamish W took me for a walk to check that I was happy and didn't feel like I was being pressured or anything (it was too late by that stage I'd already signed!). Still that was very nice of him I think. And of course my workmates are giving me endless grief alreay, my new nickname is TPT (TrustPower Tim)
As Greg said, Change is the only Constant.
So that's been my week! I hope the weather picks up, but I don't think it's going to. It's wet and miserable. The girls are now playing Jenga and listening to music.
