Today I went out to the Auckland SPCA volunteer orientation day. A whole bunch of people turned up, which really suprised me. I suppose there are a lot of other people out there who want to help out as well. When I arrived I thought there'd been a mass breakout, there were 3 cats and a dog running around. No one seemed to bothered about this though. I later found out they're the resident guests of the SPCA who live there full time now.
It was a pretty interesting morning anyway. We went through the basic rules of what you can and can't do. It's pretty much what I thought it would be, walking the dogs, cleaning up their cages, helping the public to pick a nice fluffy critter that isn't going to try and eat them when they get it home. I was always under the impression that animals get put down if they can't find a home for them, but that's not the case at all. The only time they put animals down is when they're sick or have a really bad temperment.
There were heaps of cute fluffy animals there, and we all wanted to take one home. Especially the puppies. Still everyone managed to resist that tempation. We were all told we'll be sent out a roster soon, and that'll have our start date on it. It's only one 4 hour shift a month, which is pretty resonable.
Once I left there I thought I'd try and find my way home again without catching a taxi (the animal village is a fair distance from the city, esp without a car)
After walking for 1/2 an hour in what looked like the right direction I came across a train station, which was exactly what I'd been looking for. An hour and a half later one of those strange cars with train wheels came along, and the guys in it were happy to tell me that, yes, a train would be coming along. Tomorrow. Bastards. So I wandered for a bit longer and managed to find a bus going into the city centre. I really need that bike!
I went to the movies last night with my flatmate Natialie and one of her friends. We watched the movie "The Virgin Suicides" which we all agreed was a bit trippy and strange. It's a pretty basic storyline, but they try to make it out like it's this big really deep thing, which it's not. Go and see it by all means, but don't hassle me when you realise it sucked arse.
