Theo's 2022 School Report

Submitted by TiM on

Name: Theodore Harman

Year: 2

Room: 14

Reading (Pānui)

Theo is a very capable and confident reader. His ability to read a variety of texts, and make meaning, have opinions and make informed assumptions of what the author is saying shows maturity beyond his years. Theo is always willing to read aloud, showing confidence and fluency. Our non-fiction texts and comprehension activities continue to build his extensive general knowledge base. Theo is able to articulate his thoughts more clearly on what we are reading, showing his ability to use personal experience and prior knowledge to make sense of texts.

Writing (Tuhituhi)

Theo has a great handle on the conventions of writing and is beginning to plan and write both fiction and non-fiction texts for a growing number of purposes. He is aware that we write for people to read it and always endeavours to make it interesting. Theo can make choices about content, words, and ideas to match his reason for writing. He continues to develop his own writing personality or 'voice' and is making efforts to tell his own stories, as well as re-telling others he loves, including Harry Potter and similar themes. He enjoyed being part of an extension writing group last term.

Mathematics (Pāngarau)

Theo is a natural mathematician who enjoys solving problems and learning new strategies. He is able to decide which strategy is most efficient when solving problems and can articulate well how he solved a problem. As Theo continues to grow his knowledge of different strategies, his ability to solve more challenging problems easily will increase. He sees patterns in numbers and his basic facts knowledge is impeccable for his age. Theo's next step is to continue working on larger addition and subtraction problems and solidify his division and fractions knowledge.

Other Curriculum Areas

Theo has blossomed this year during our physical education sessions. He has found a way to indulge his competitive side, often wanting to be outside playing a game, kicking a ball or running around with his classmates. Theo is more able to handle unfairness, letting minor infractions go, realising it is just a game. Watching Theo shake off these indiscretions and carry on with a game is lovely to see. Theo loves to build Lego and is often creating amazing work during our learning through play time. He is able to share and take turns more confidently. Theo always gives his best. During our mindfulness and yoga sessions, he takes it as an opportunity to learn something new and make the most of challenging himself. It was fabulous to see Theo participate in choir this year.

Teacher Comment

Theo is a very capable learner who enjoys the challenge of learning new things and making sense of the world around him. Theo is competitive and has shown great maturity throughout the second half of the year, showing he is more able to cope with things not going his way and better articulating his feelings.

Theo enjoys all aspects of school, academic, sport and the arts. He gives everything his all, and it is a pleasure to

watch him now expand his horizons socially, and taking risks where he may previously have been reluctant.

You are so ready for Year 3, Theo. We know you will continue to blossom and show all of your strengths to the

middle school teachers and students. All the best for 2023.

Student Comment

At school, I like to play with my friends in the Nature Corner and in class with the Lego. I show manaakitanga/care when I give my friends ideas when they don't know what to write about. I am really good at writing and reading because it is my 3rd year of writing and my 3rd year of reading. My favourite part of the day is lunchtime because I get to play for a long, long time.

Next year, I am looking forward to being a middle because there will be hard maths.
