ETA to Camp - 18 Hours!

Submitted by TiM on

Beth bought home this lovely piece of artwork the other day.  Took me a while but I figured out each item.  Replaced the EEEPC which finally blew up about ~12 years.  It was so poked, I tried to fix it with a bit of strength and it smashed into a lot of bits.  Anyway I managed to replace it with a spare Raspberru Pi Zero W I had lying around - the code uses the Videocore chip of the Pi and it means the CPU it uses is only ~30%.  Amazing.  Like Sam said when I sent him a message about it, shows progress in hardware over the last 12 years and he's right.  The EEEPC was a little Atom PC.

Camp tomorrow! I'm all packed, mostly.  Beth's all packed, mostly.  I finished heaps of work last week to try and make sure I'm not going to leave anything hanging...

Happy 10th Birthday Beautiful Bethany Bongles

Submitted by TiM on

It was Beth's 10th Birthday on Saturday.  10 years old.  How quickly time flies.  She woke up not too early and was very happy it was her birthday, not stressed, she knew that presents would be coming at some stage!  Eventually we all managed to gather in the lounge to give her presents.  This year she got:

  • Some new clothes
  • A huge Slime Making kit
  • A $50 Prezzy card (in a Daddy made Blind Bag)
  • A Green plush frog, since named Gerald.  Theo picked it out thinking Beth would love it and she sure does. [Pictured meeting Kermot for the first time]
  • Some books from Pa
  • Some lovely clothes from Granny
  • A huge bead/braclet making kit

After presents and some breakfast it was time to go up to swimming, can't get away from learning just because it's your Birthday!  Swimming was pretty normal, we drove straight home though instead...

Holly's 40th / Warm Pool / Sick Theo

Submitted by TiM on

Friday Theo woke up with an even worse than it has been barking cough, and decided that he was just too sick to go to school.  I'm sure he wasn't, but the cough was very nasty and he was blowing lots of snot, so it seemed to make the most sense just to leave him at home.  I dropped Beth off up at school and reminded her multiple times to please go into the office to mark Theo off as sick.  Even as she was getting out of the car at "The Way of the Panda" I reminded her to go straight there and she got crabby with me "I know! You've already told me!".  Anyway of course she got out of the car and turned off that part of her brain because Sarah got a phonecall about 30 minutes later asking why Theo wasn't in school.  Doh.

Friday night...

Drupal 10

Submitted by TiM on

Welcome to Drupal 10.  Yes the theme is all fucked up, there's a lot of things to fix, but I've dragged it kicking and screaming from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10.  It was harder than I figured it would be, but hey, after a lot of trial and error I've done it.  Drupal 10!

Oh yes this is on the back of upgrading from Debain 11 to Debian 12 on Micro yesterday.  That was quite painless in the end, I'd been putting it off for ages but it just worked...  At least that's what I think, I'm sure I'm going to find some fuckup somewhere in 3 weeks time.

Happy Birthday to Me / I'm Fat / Rugby / Night Out / People of NOW

Submitted by TiM on

Last Tuesday was my 47th Birthday.  Happy Birthday to me.  Damnit the H and G keys on this laptop are dying, so I'll be needing a new laptop soon.  Anyway excuse any missing H and G's in this story, this poor old Dell won't last much longer it seems.  So yes it was my Birthday.  I got on the scales to see how much I weighted and folks, it wasn't pretty.  So I'll be on a diet again for the foreseeable future.  Cause I'm fat.  Oh man half the keys on this keyboard are giving up.  If I press g I get repeating lines.  It seems once the laptop has warmed up they all work properly.  Bizzare.

Anyway, it was my Birthday.  I got up and Theo had totally forgotten and went about his morning, but when Beth came out she sang me Happy Birthday and then made the cutest...

New Job / Sarah's Holiday / Cheerleading

Submitted by TiM on

Here I sit on the couch doing something I never thought I'd do, I'm typing Tim's Diary on a Mac.  A Macbook Pro M2 specifically.  My new work laptop.  Before I started my new job they asked me what laptop I wanted and I started to look at the usual suspects.  But then I though hell whenever I see Greg with his Macbook he's never got the thing plugged in, the battery life they have is amazing.  Plus I know a Mac basically is Unix (FreeBSD) underneath and I use Unix all day every day.  And finally what swung me was the fact I know everyone else in my team is going to have a Mac, so it seems dumb to be the odd person out with a Windows PC.  I've never used a Mac before so it seemed time to give it a go.  I've had it for about...

Happy 8th Birthday Theo

Submitted by TiM on

It was Theo's Birthday on Thursday.  I had to wake him up to remind him, he'd have slept for another hour or so I guess if I hadn't.  He was still snoring when I roused him to remind him it was his Birthday.  He was excited for his Basic Breakfast that we were going to have up at Origin Cafe, and I wanted to be sure I wasn't too late to work after that.

Once he booted up he came into the lounge (still wearing his onesie) to examine his presents. We'd already setup his "Level 8" banner above the TV and a couple of shiny balloons including a Rainbow 8 balloon. Then it was present time!  He got:

  • Two Train Adventure books from Pa
  • Kermit the Frog bag, much like Beth's excepted larger (since named Robin)
  • A Garmin Vivofit Jr. 3
  • Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza...

Make it last all week

Sarah bought Theo a bottle of juice at the supermarket on Thursday.  When they got home she told him "You have to make it last all week"

Fast forward to last night when he walked into the lounge and just, apropo of nothing, mentions to Sarah "The week starts on Sunday you know!".  Then mentions to Sarah about how kind he's been, sharing his juice with Bethany.

Took a little while to realise he's already drunk all his juice.

How Much Rain / Cheerleading + The Zoo / New Job

Submitted by TiM on

It's Sunday morning and it's raining.  It's been raining all night.  It rained pretty much all yesterday.  Beth's friend Daisy is here and the girls don't really know what to do, they're bored.  I told them they could go and stand out in the rain, but they weren't a huge fan of that suggestion.

So last Sunday was the big cheerleading comp!  I went down and got coffee for Sarah and I from the local cafe again, then Sarah got Beth all dressed up in all her cheerleading gear.  My contant background fear that we'd forgotten some part of her cheerleading costume turned out to be unfounded (of course) and so we headed off to the event.  It was super packet with people everywhere, it was hard to get a park.  I dropped everyone off and then went back home to get the water bottles we'd left behind.  Then back...

Saturday in Wellington

Submitted by TiM on

We had a bit of a Saturday morning sleep in, not really that much though.  The kids were up early ready to rock and roll.  And by Rock and Roll I mean get on their iPads and giggle. I zipped down to the local foursquare to buy some breakfast foods and some coffees for us from the cafe.

Once everyone was breakfasted we jumped in the car and headed for Te Papa Museum. We found a park and spend about 3-4 hours exploring around Te Papa.  We looked at the Nature Area, then Upstairs to the Treaty of Waitangi exhibition (it's just a copy but Beth was still keen to see it), before getting a bite to eat at the cafe, then walking around and see Phar Lap's skeleton, colour in some wallpaper for Matariki and the went to see Britton bike.  Saw some artwork.

Then we went downstairs to...
