The Taxi and Keys Saga

Submitted by TiM on

Well I've gone and done it again. It would seem that a week can't go by without me losing my keys. I dunno what it is. This time I left them in a taxi of all places!

When I finally realised that's what I'd done (about 3 hours later) I was a bit annoyed. Do you know how many taxi's there are in Auckland??

I think the answer is about 5 billion. All I remembered about my cabbie was that he was a big dude, he was black, he drove a white cab, and his name was Mohummad. ie that narrowed it down to about 1/2 a billion cabbies.

After running outside and hassling about 20 various cabbies on the street (much to their annoyance), I finally managed to find out which company he worked for. I called them, got hold of Mohummad and he said "Yup, I have your...

New Look and General Ramblings

Submitted by TiM on

I've changed the look of the site a bit. I think it looks a bit better than before. The conference finished yesterday, so we had to pack up all the gear we'd brought in. We didn't realise how much there was until we had to pack it all back into boxes and cart them off to the waiting trucks. Happy Happy Joy etc...

So once we got packed up we all went off to the pub for a well earned Guiness and some food. Have you ever eaten that blue vein cheese stuff? Ugh. I don't know what the deal with the stuff is, but I know now for a fact I'd rather eat the mold out of the bottom of my shower than eat the mold in that cheese ever again. How I managed to stop myself throwing up on everyone there I'll never know. Anyway, Tim's No1 NZ...

Bad Things Are Happening!

Submitted by TiM on

For some reason the dns entry for muffin got removed from the ipg.tsnz.net zone file. Not sure why, but if you're reading this then it's been fixed.

Been a pretty quiet day today, nothing has gone wrong here at the Aotea conference, which is good. And also bad, because it means us Network Admin's have nothing to do. Still, better to have nothing to do than be running around in a blind panic...

I've also been keeping myself amused with a little webcam that Phill (the other guy I work with) has had lying around. Soon as I can get it to go properly I'll try and setup a wanky live streaming thingy. If I can be bothered.

I think we're all going shopping tonight. We need to, that's for sure. There is only so long you can survive on Bread and Honey (Just kidding Mother). It's good to know...

Things and Stuff

Submitted by TiM on

Well firstly sorry I haven't replied to emails that have been sent to me in the last few days. I haven't been at a place where I can check them. Hopefully I'll get around to it tomorrow or on Thursday.

Here's what's been happening...

Not much really!!

Work has been pretty hectic, setting up the Aotea Centre has been a pretty massive job. I'm learning heaps already though, which is good.

There isn't a TV at the flat at the moment, which is both good and bad. They play (old reruns of) friends here everynight, which is pretty cool.

You wouldn't believe how many McDonalds, Pizza Huts, Burger Kings and various other fast food joints there are over here in Auckland. It's like Sydney, you can't walk more than about 50 metres without coming across one.

Thankfully there are also a heap of good food places, included a number of...

Monday's A Busy Day...

Submitted by TiM on

It's been a real busy day today. Firstly we had big routing fault, we'd made some changes on one of our routers which mucked up the routing for a customer. We spent 1/2 the morning chasing that!

Then the rest of the day we've spent setting up routers/switches for the New Zealand Government's E-Commerce summit which starts on Wednesday.

It's all sorted now though, tomorrow we test it all to make sure that Wednesday goes off without a hitch.

Hopefully I'll get paid this week, though I left a message with the payroll people, and as payroll people are want to do they haven't bothered to call me back.

Oh well, I'll fight them tomorrow. It's time to go home and cook some tea. That's if there's anything in the cupboards. I think I need to go shopping first.

Auckland on a Sunday

Submitted by TiM on

Well I've settled in OK into my new room. Both my flatmates (Kate and Natalie) seem really nice. Admittedly my matress thingy could be a lot more comfortable, but like I said yesterday, it'll do until I get a real bed.

I failed yesterday to find out exaclty where the Cats sail, so I thought today I'd find out for sure...

Turns out they sail at Takapuna Beach, which is over on the other side, over the Habour Bridge. I found the right bus to catch, and went over there. After a look around the local Takapuna market (They have markets all over the show here) I wandered down to the beach. There!!

Exactly what I was looking for. Out on the water was a whole fleet (well, about 8-10) Hobie 16's. Turns out the 18's aren't popular over here at all, and I've been told that there's probably only...
