Johnnie Visits and the Missed Bus Incident

Submitted by TiM on

Well this weekend Johnnie (my dad) flew over from Tassie to visist. It was good to see him again, and we had a pretty good time checking out some of the places I haven't yet seen. Yesterday we caught the ferry over to Waikeke Island which is a really nice island about the size of Bruny. We had a small adventure too...

When we got there we caught the bus and travelled around until we found a nice place (a beach) to get out and walk around. We grabbed something to eat, and I suggested we walk up the other end of the beach while because I was sure that the bus would travel along that way. Johnnie wasn't so sure, but I kept saying "Stop worrying so much, we'll be fine" which turned out not to be the case. The bus was due to arrive at 2pm, and when it was 2:15 and there was still no sign of the bus, I decided that prehaps Johnnie was right, prehaps the bus didn't come along this way after all. So I told him to stop moaning (he'll deny he was moaning) and start walking. As we walked we asked a local Islander how long it'd take to walk back to the main part of town. His laughter was enough to suggest it'd be a bit longer than 5 minutes. Anyway we kept walking, I kept telling Johnnie that some nice Islander would be sure to give us a lift. Eventually (20 minutes later) some nice Islander did pick us up, and gave us a lift into town.

I still maintain that it was a much more interesting way to the see the Island than just catch the bus, I don't think Johnnie was that convienced but the meal and a beer at the end of it and it was OK.

Haven't done much today, I got out to Takapuna too late to get on the rescue boat which was a bit of a bummer, but doesn't matter I'll just have to get out of bed before 11:30am next time. The local Santa parade went down Queen St (main street in Auckland) and it was amazing. Quite a bit bigger than the Hobart one! I sort of watched it from the window of my apartment, but also wandered down later in the day to have a look at some of the floats.

Anyway, enough typing. Time to get some food!
