NZNOG 2023 / Late Night iPad / Dad / Feijoas

Submitted by TiM on

We've been worried about Beth the last month or so, she seems to have trouble getting to sleep.  We'll put her to bed at 8pm and she's still awake at 10pm, sometimes 11pm etc.  We've asked her is everything OK, is she worried about something?  Nope.  Is everything OK at school are people upsetting you? Nope.

ANYWAY long story short I heard the other night some little noises and when I walked up the hallway to go into her room I heard the unmistakable "donk!" of her iPad hitting the floor.  I asked her if she was using it "No?" and had a quick look at it.  It seemed unused, but I'm not an Apple person.  I asked her again on Sunday morning, "No Daddy I haven't been using it at night" and so I left at that.  But we thought we'll just make sure, so I got her to take it up to Sarah to get it updated and so Sarah could resync it with her iPad to see what's been going on.  Next thing there's tears and crying and all sorts from upstairs.  Turns out faced with knowing she was about to be busted, she fessed up and told Sarah yes, I've been playing games on it at night.  SO guess who has no iPad for two weeks and isn't' allowed Roblox anymore?  That's right, Bethany M.  It used to be that her iPad "Went to Sleep" at 8pm each night so it wasn't usable, but for some reason that'd stopped working - or maybe we'd disabled it over the Holidays or something.

I've made sure the Wifi on their devices turns off each night now at 9pm and doesn't turn back on until 7am, to help stop any late night/early morning silliness.  And both iPads are now on a "Went to Sleep" timer as well so they can't distract them (not that Theo's been using his at all)

So yea! A bit of worry and concern about nothing!  Mostly just very annoyed with her that she kept lying to us about it - we were starting to worry did she have some sort of insomnia or something else going on that was making her have trouble sleeping.  Nope, just her iPad and a keen set of ears that could hear us coming up the hall as I did my checks on them before I went to bed each night.

Went to NZNOG in Rotorua last week.  We were so lucky, we drove up on Tuesday and on Monday they opened up the Napier Taupo road.  Before that we were going to have to drive ~9 hours via Palmerston North to get to Rotorua.  But instead it was only ~3.5 hours or so.  Driving through Bayview and Eskvalley was pretty sobering, it's like Pakowhai really.  Just total devastation, silt everywhere, windowing blowing through the broken windows of smashed houses.  Once we got past Bayview the road itself was pretty good, washed away in a few places but patched up nicely.

Tuesday was drive day, followed by curry at the dodgiest looking curry house in the world.  Took them an hour to make our order.  But the curry was GOOD.  Wednesday was a day with the Trustpower boys now that we're all owned by Mercury.  Just talking about how each other's network looks, how we're going to try and smoosh them together etc.  Then it was off to Welcome Drinks at the Hotel.  Then Thursday was the first day of the conference which was good, followed by dinner and drinking and Luge up at Rotorua Skyline.  Was a pretty great night really, we had a good time.  Friday I slept into until 8am! Didn't help that Kent decided to shoulder charge me at 1am in the morning.

Friday conference was good too, though I spoke to Jeremy at lunchtime and he told me Dad's having a few more health problems that aren't great.  Dad's going to see his brain specialist today, so hopefully he gets some good news and is at least allowed to travel to Melbourne on Wednesday to see us.

That's all, back to work.

Edit: Spoke to Dad this afternoon, his specialist can't see him today which is a right pain in the butt. But he can't see him because he's had a death in the family.  So he's going to see Dad on Wednesday, which is after Dad's flight to Melbourne.  Out of an abundance of caution, he's going to stay in Hobart because we don't know if he's OK to fly with his condition.

Edit2: Forgot to mention that we sold Feijoa's on the weekend.  Saturday sales started quickly but then dropped off - I wondered why.  Later that day when we'd finally sold all our bags I realised the sign at the top of J road had blown over and no one on the main road could see we were selling them.  Sunday when we put them out again, I tied the sign up properly and we sold out our 20 bags within 30 minutes.  Beth was out there talking to everyone and collecting the money, she had a great time.  All up in 2 days we made almost $100!
