New Job

Submitted by TiM on

So I've finally started my new job.  In fact now that I'm writing this diary entry, I'm 3 weeks into my new job, so I'm almost an old hand at it.  OK not quite, but it's certainly a very busy job with so much to do, lots to learn, but also heaps to do that I already know how to do and just have to get on and do it!

My first day I arrived and said hi to everyone, most of whom I'd already met a number of times in the interviewing or pre-starting process.  My laptop was already setup, I already had a swipe card with my name printed on it and everything was setup and working.  I think that's the first time I've started at an organisation and everything's been ready to go, but then again I'm not changing jobs that often these days so probably my memory is just failing me.  Anyway I went on a tour with a few other newbies and met the whole company, so many names that of course I can't remember them all.  I'm still learning people's names each day, it's strange going from a group of 5 people to a group of 50.

It's great to be back in the ISP game anyway.  In my first 2 weeks I've been swinging traffic around, shutting down some peering we no longer use, standing up a 10G PNI to Netflix for them to do cache fill for us.  And no customers have complained!  The one thing that does cause me more stress now is the Internet at home - if it "blipped" previously I could just blame my ISP.  Now that I am my ISP, I can't just do that.  Like my boss Greg said, he always get worried when his Internet at home craps out because he has to worry "Is it just ME, or is it all our customers?"

But yea, it's great.  I'm really happy. We've got a great team of people, we're small so we operate fast and quick, there's not a lot of worrying about the correct process etc etc.  I mean there's enough of that, we're just not emcumbered with overly complex processes to do simple things.  It's the perfect balance.  We've got so many huge projects coming up it's impossible to know where they're all going to fit (and in fact I'm sure some will have to get bumped, but we'll see) so there's plenty of stuff to keep me interested.

For non work stuff, I've been dismantling the pool out the back.  That was a fun job last weekend, getting out the sledgehammer and just smashing lots of shit up into smaller bits.  I've removed all the decking and the pool itself is pretty much ready to come out.  I'd do some more today, but it's raining and I seem to have come down with a slight cold so I think I'll just take it easy today.  We're getting a skip on Queen's Birthday Weekend so I'll load up every little bit of crap into the skip then and it can get carted away, never to be seen again.  Hooray.

Beth's at a sleepover, Theo's watching his iPad.  I'd better get ready to go and get Beth in a minute.  I'm sure lots of other things have happened over the last 3 weeks, but none of them major enough for my brain to recall.  I really will have to start trying to remember to write in my diary a lot more often.  I say that, but then I never have time!

Oh it was mother's day last weekend, we went out to the Famer's Market for the second weekend in a row.  Wasn't as nice last week, it was a bit overcast.

I remember what's new! I'm sitting on it.  We got a new leather couch that hopefully when Biscuit gets on, he doesn't transfer his stink to it.  He's only allowed to sit on the dog bed thing that's atop it, hopefully though the couch won't smell like DOG like the old one did.  I mean I didn't mind it, but yes, it's not the best smell to be greeted with when you're a guest.
