Highs and Lows

Submitted by TiM on

Been an interesting couple of weeks, I mean not really THAT interesting I guess, but some slight changes from the usual. I've been sick the last couple of days with a nasty cold, Beth had it ~1 week ago, so I'm not surprised I caught it.  I started to feel a bit off on Wednesday and I figured I was getting sick, Thursday sure enough.  I was pretty much laid up on Friday and again yesterday.

Beth's last day of Term yesterday, we were telling her it would be her last day at school where she was the only Harman there.  We had to explain a number of times that because when she goes back next term, Theo's going to be at school too!  Then Theo didn't understand and thought he was missing out, the whole explanation backfired badly.  Eventually I think they understood, at least the upset stopped.  We weren't trying to upset them we were trying to make it interesting!  Beth's last day was a dress up day and she made herself a dog mask AND matching paws.  All made of paper, the paws slip onto her hands.  Very clever and well done.  We had to think of way of attaching a string to the mask for her that would be strong enough, eventually we figured out if we tie a string to two icecream sticks and then glue that to the sides of the mask.  So Sarah did that and thankfully it worked, when she came home on Friday afternoon her mask was still intact, as were her little dog paws.

She also got an award this term, well done Bethany.  We're very proud of her, of course.

It was Soccer again for Theo yesterday, I didn't go because of my cold so I stayed at home with Beth.  It was freezing cold, it was the frostiest it's been this Winter so far Saturday morning.  Still off he went, keen as Mustard which was good.  Sounds like he had a pretty good match too, he said he didn't get that many kicks but he still came home with a big smile on his face.

After Soccer though Sarah took him out to the Hospital, he had a followup appointment for his hearing.  They'd done two pre-school hearing checks at Kindy and both had come back showing some issues, so he had to go see the specialist. They unfortunately confirmed what the pre-tests had shown, that he has some hearing problems/loss.  Mostly really deep/low frequencies, so  not in the range of speech which explains why he's talking etc fine.  Not really sure what exactly it means long term, he'll have to go and see another specialist and we'll talk to them and find out what it really means.  So that's rather annoying.  It's funny to look back before Beth was born and we were so worried something was going to be wrong with her, because of her Right Sided Arch.  But it turns out Theo is the one that needs more medical attention and worrying about.  I feel guilty worrying about him, there's parents and families out there with much, much bigger problems that low range hearing loss.

Once Theo and Sarah were back home from the Hospital, I helped pack up the car and then wave goodbye to the three of them as they drove off down to Danniverke for Rex's 70th Birthday party.  I would have gone, but in this climate a sick person turning up would be majorly frowned upon, so I didn't.  I just stayed home and cooked Spag Bol.  Something I love but Sarah's not a fan of, especially the version I love which is a jar of Dolmio stirred into some mince. Yummo.  I took Biscuit for a slow walk to New World and back, then went to bed.  Thankfully today I feel a lot better.

Last Friday night Sarah, Nicola, Steve and I went out for dinner.  Was nice to see Steve and show him my WW setup, he's got one too.  I'd never really taken a real notice of it but now that I've got mine we had a good old chat about all the different brews and ideas etc.  Then we went into town for dinner at Sai Thai, folllowed by some drinks at Market St.  Man I felt old there, watching all the young people walk in bright eyed ready to party at 11pm, while I was ready to get into bed to sleeeeppp.  Anyway we had a good night.  Saturday morning we were a bit slower than usual, I drove up to get Beth and Theo in the pouring rain, amazed that Soccer was still on.  On the way to Soccer, Sarah slipped down the stairs at the front of the house!  I was so worried she'd landed on her spine as they lay there, but thankfully she'd just landed on her bum.  So she dusted herself off and got into the car and off we went to Soccer.  And sure enough even though the pitch was muddy and terrible, Soccer was on for the little ones.  Theo had a good game, he was quite unsure at first but once he got stuck in he really seemed to enjoy himself.  The rest of Saturday was just spent being lazy really, it just rained so there wasn't much to do.

Sunday I went for a run from home to Mitre 10, then Sarah and the kids drove and met me there.  We had a nice lunch there, then got some wooden stair cleaner and a good scrubbing brush.  When we got home Beth and I sprayed and scrubbed and sprayed and scrubbed, getting all the moss and mildew off the front steps, making them much less slippy.  Sarah's bruise was REALLY bad poor thing, I should have cleaned them ages ago.

As I was tucking Beth into bed that night she lamented that the weekend had been "quite boring" for her.  Which I actually felt quite bad about, because she was right.  We didn't really do much, mostly because it was raining the whole time.  Anyway so I'm making up for it this afternoon now they're all back from Danniverke, I've taken them for a bike ride and as soon as I've finished typing this I'm taking them to Anderson Park for an hour or so of playing.

Oh yes finally, here's a book Beth wrote last week.

Edit: We had a good time at Anderson Park.
