Poor Oscar! I filled up his water bowl this morning and when I went out to the shed later I noticed he was splashing around in it quite happily, like he usually does. But then I noticed a large (well, pea sized, large for a lovebird) lump on his tail. I also realised that he'd been pulling out quite a few feathers (we'd noticed a couple the last week or two but didn't think much of it)
I took him up to the local vet but she happily admitted she didn't know anything about birds and said I should take him to bird specialist if I was worried.
Which of course I was!
So lunch time I drove Oscar to the second vet, the bird specialist man. He was really good too, he said Oscar was the sixth bird he'd seen that day. He put some Oscar poop under the microscope and told me that there's some nasty bacteria in there, but that'll be fixed with some antibiotics. He then took a look and the cyst and said that it won't get better if we just leave it and that Oscar will need an operation to fix it! Poor little guy. So I patted him on the head and left him with them. He's going to stay overnight and then be operated on tomorrow morning, I can collect him tomorrow afternoon.
We're both worried about him but I'm sure he'll be Ok.

He is a tough little guy,
He is a tough little guy, yea. I'm sure he'll be fine, the vet gave the impression it's a pretty standard thing.

Get well soon Oscar! Katie (our cockateil) says "chirp chirp chirp!" The only time in the past 11 years she has had need of a vet consultation was after Socks (our recently deceased cat) tried to eat her! And then it was only a phone consult!! Hope it isn't something nasty the hedgehog has brought into the household???

Hi Laree!
It's not the hedgehog, the vet said it's something that could have been growing slowly for at least a couple of weeks. Plus we keep the hedgehog seperate. That was certainly something that had crossed my mind though.
I hope I say say in 11 years time that this was the only time Oscar needed the vet. Lucky Katie!

Get Well Oscar!
Tim, hoping it all goes well! I am sure he'll be happy as in just a few short days.
Cheers mate, Dallas.
