Beth's First Day of Childcare

Submitted by TiM on

We (well, mostly Sarah) packed Beth up today with food, nappies, toys etc and took her to in home care with a lady called Jenny. By all reports, the day went quite well. Beth knew something was up this morning when Dad will still holding her and Mum was packing stuff up, not playing games with her in the lounge.

Jenny said that Beth didn't have a good sleep in the morning, even though she "tried everything" like walking in the pram etc. She did have a late afternoon sleep for a couple of hours though, which was good...

Long Weekend in Tairua

Submitted by TiM on

We spent a long weekend in Tairua over the weekend! Thursday afternoon I headed home early from work and we packed up the car ready to go. Sarah was out at work meeting and I forgot to put Beth to bed for her snooze, or feed her. So when we left she was already over tired and a bit hungry. We booted the cat outside with a massive bowl of biscuits and water and headed off! We went via Peter and Mary's, we took Mary and Holly and Adrian took Peter. Off we drove!
Beth wasn't a big fan of the Napier -> Taupo drive, but then again no one is really. We stopped in Taupo and had dinner and Cob 'n' Co, not the flashest of places but one that is very kiddie friendly. We gave Beth some dinner (and fed ourselves) and then kept driving. We stopped again so Sarah could feed Beth and, amazingly after about an hour or so she finally drifted off to sleep. Which was good for her because she was fed up, miserable and crying. And good for us because she'd been fed up, miserable and crying.

After what seemed like an eternity we arrived at our accommodation in Tairua. The place was freezing cold, even though the caretaker had left the heaters on and the wood fire burning for us. Brrrrrr it was so cold. We unloaded all our stuff, put the kiddies to bed and went to bed ourselves. What a day it had been.

Beth didn't have a very good sleep, probably because she'd not had much sleep during the day and her was in her port-a-cot in a strange place. A few upset cries during the night, but she slept in until 7:30am which is pretty good her for really.

Friday we decided to go for a drive to Pauanai, which is where all the rich and beautiful people have a holiday shack. Bach I mean bach. Have a look at this Google Streetview to see how flash the place is. This is The Waterways, where everyone can park their own boat next to their Bach. Yea, it's pretty flash. So we had a look around there, though as a place there's actually not much to see really, apart from flash lodgings. And to laugh at some of the streetnames, "The Dividend" being my favourite ultra-wanky street name.

Friday night Holly and Adrian cooked us a lovely roast, then we Trivial Pursuit, the updated New Zealand version. I got very crabbed off with myself because I couldn't remember Drew Barrymore's name even though I could picture her face in my mind and I knew exactly who the person was. I had to give up on that question, it was for a pie too. Our team lost.

Saturday we mixed things up a bit and went for a drive to Whitianga, stopping in at the local pub for some lunch. By the time we'd finished our meal and went to do some shopping everything had closed at 2pm, so it was a bit of a wasted mission really. On the way back in the car Beth got very upset her in her car seat, the only way in the end I could calm her down was to play Fawlty Towers to her that I've got on my phone. She seemed to enjoy it, a good sign.

Saturday night Sarah and I cooked Risotto. I didn't really help much, just chopped up a few things, Sarah did all the hard work. Then we settled in to watch what is probably one of the stupidest movies we've watched in a long time, called "The Island". It just went on and on and had more holes in it's plot than a block of Swiss Cheese. People kept going to bed and the movie still kept going. Ugh. Anyway it was some entertainment and it was the only DVD in the place.

Sunday we didn't do too much, Sarah, Beth and I went for lunch to a local cafe called The Old Mill, while everyone else went to Thames. Sunday night Peter and Mary cooked Lamb Burgers and then we played a few rounds of Mexican Trains before all heading to bed.

Monday we packed up all our stuff, cleaned the unit and headed off. We timed it so that Beth would hopefully sleep, it took her ages and Sarah to really help sooth and calm her, but she did sleep for 1:20 in the car again! Good little chicken. We were going to stop in Tiaru but because Beth was still asleep we trucked on and drove all the way to Taupo again. Peter knew this nice little French Cafe so we had lunch there, bumping into a neighbour from our street as well!

We finally arrived back on Monday afternoon after a good drive, Beth didn't sleep again but she was mostly happy for the drive. When we got home Tui was nowhere to be seen for a while so we were a bit worried, she didn't look she'd eaten much food either! But there were some bird feathers around the place... Eventually she showed up looking pretty pleased with herself, she even bought in another bird that evening to show us her skills as a hunter. Very good work puss puss. She was pretty pleased to see us again I think, lots of purring and drooling by the fire.

I think Beth had a great time away, she really enjoyed having new people to look at and talk (well, babble) at. She always watched Joseph intently, babies seem to recognise other babies! She really loved crawling around the place and the Bach was really good because it had a little carpeted step down which Beth just loved to find any reason to crawl up. She did a lot more crawling on all fours instead of commando crawling, but she still defaults to the commando crawl for everything. We really noticed her babbling a lot more though, she looked at me a few times and said "Dad!" though I still think she's just happening to make that noise rather than actually calling me Dad.

We were very lucky to get to stay where we did. One of Peter's customers own the bach and let us stay there, which is very kind of him! I'd highly recommend it if anyone else wants to stay, here it is on Book-A-Bach.

Phew! Back to work today, at least it'll be another 4 day week.

What We Do In The Shadows

Submitted by TiM on

Peter and Mary very kindly came over to look after Beth last night, so we could go and watch What We Do In The Shadows, a comedy movie about a bunch of Vampires that live in Wellington. It was written by one of the Flight of the Concorde members, and the guy who wrote Boy, another great Kiwi movie.
We were both a bit worried we might not love it heaps because we've heard so much about how great it is, but it was still really fantastic despite our high expectations! If you get the chance, you should see this movie!

What else... Hmmmm during the week I helped Jeremy setup his new Internet Blog. YES YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. Jeremy has actually setup a thing. On the Internet. Go and checkout http://thewanderingjedi.com

Friday night it was Joseph's second birthday. But it was mostly a missions for Sarah and...

10 Months Old

Submitted by TiM on

Beth turned 10 months old last week! Time flies when you're a baby it seems. She can now commando crawl, pull herself up (sometimes), has a great go at talking, can feed herself food (small things placed in front of her), figure out how to get up, over and around things etc. She's a clever cookie!

Friday night we went to the Hastings Night Market. Sarah's friend Sarah had her lolly shop there, plus there were lots of other baby related stalls. The only thing we bought (apart from a hamburger and lollies) were some more knitted vegetables. Including a leak, which I think is really cool.
I carried Beth around in the front pack, easier than trying to pram around. Still she wanted to grizzle though and eat bits of my hamburger.

Sarah was quite unwell last week, some sort of nasty stomach bug thing. I came home last...

The Grand Budapest Weekend

Submitted by TiM on

Ben, Di and Jacob came to visit us this weekend. It was lovely to see them all, especially to see how much Jacob has grown since we saw him last. He's now crawling around, proper crawling, not the commando crawl that Beth's still doing.

Saturday morning, surprise surprise, we were all up early with our respective babies. We all went for a walk up to Taradale to visit the market, which was very small this weekend, only about 8 stalls there. We were quite early though, maybe more turn up as the day progresses. We had breakfast at Bay Espresso then walked back home and put the babies to sleep. Go to sleep little babies.
I took the toys we'd hired from the toy library back, goodbye concertina caterpillar squeezy thing that always sang out "Squeeze Me!" This time I hired another little flashy sing-a-long thing, but the major...

I've got my own opinions thanks.

Submitted by TiM on

Someone is starting to get their own opinions on things, mostly around food. Suddenly this week Beth has started to turn up her nose at certain foods. Weetbix? Yes please. Porridge? NO THANK YOU. Her trick is to grizzle, then if you keep trying to feed the offending item to her, she turns a full 180 in her high chair, facing the back of it, and she ignores you. Or keeps grizzling. Or both. It's pretty funny, though it's also quite annoying that she suddenly won't eat things she always used to eat.

Otherwise though, Beth's good. Crawling around all...

Mum for a Day

Submitted by TiM on

Sarah's been in Auckland yesterday and today, so I had to look after Beth pretty much all day yesterday. We both waved Sarah off in the Taxi at 7:15am, then Beth and I played for a couple of hours until she was tired. I gave her some bottle and off she went for a snooze, very glad to get into bed!
She woke up right on time, I got her up, gave her lunch and we went to swimming! She enjoyed swimming, like she always does, though the few times she went under she opened her mouth and got a...

Wooden That Be Nice!

Submitted by TiM on

Peter swung by today with his repaired trailer and took me up to his friend's brother property to collect a bunch of firewood that was there just waiting to be collected! Very handy. While we were there we had a good look around the area, there's an old abandoned tulip growing plantation there, though most of it has been pulled down or has rotted away. It was really interesting walking through the abandoned area - I wanted to take photos but I didn't as I wasn't sure if we were even supposed to be there (I don't think we were)

Anyway, the main thing is that we have a full wood shed again, thanks very much Peter! Tui will be happy because the rats and mice will have somewhere warm to live, so she can go back to trying to stalk and catch them in there. Many a time recently...

New Carpet, Door Removals, Company Dinner

Submitted by TiM on

We got new carpet! It looks really nice, feels really nice and seems to keep the lounge feeling warmer, though that's probably just the placebo effect kicking in.
It's a nice mushroom grey colour, not too dark but not too light. We chose well. And by we of course I mean Sarah, I have no idea about these things.

Beth's doing OK, Sarah took her to the Dr's on Wednesday because she was running a tempurature. Dr agreed, said she had a very red sore throat. Sarah's got the same thing, so maybe it's a virus or something. Beth seems good and bad, sometimes she's quite hot and her cheeks are all flushed, but she's always in a pretty good mood. I mean she still likes to grizzle but she always likes to grizzle. She's not really upset or anything though.

Wednesday night was the Prophecy mid-year Christmas event. It...

Sore Baby

Submitted by TiM on

Poor Beth last night! She had really hot red flushed cheeks and was pretty quiet and a little upset. She was so hot too! We felt really sad for her, we put her to bed nice and early and she was so tired/exhausted she didn't even make a peep as we moved around the house getting the rooms ready for the new carpet that's being laid today.

She made a few more noises during the evening, waking up when I went to take her temperature again at about 10pm. She was exactly 37c which is warm but not panic. So...
