Fucking Finally

Submitted by TiM on

Today went my way.
I had a really good suggestion from a workmate out of the blue that really helped to nail the problem. It was such a simple and good suggestion I wish I could take credit for it myself, but that would be lying. The problem still isn't fixed but I'm pretty sure when I put replacement gear in tomorrow it will be. If not, I'll be tres grumpy.

Also I got Sarah and I some tickets to Greenday, I kinda farked that up and forgot when they were on sale so I had to get them off TradeMe. The price wasn't optimal but at least we're going now. Happy Happy Joy Joy.

It's amazing how much things can change in a day! Woohoo!
Hopefully on Wednesday (it's Monday here) I'll be off to San Jose.

Bored

Submitted by TiM on

I was quite bored today. I got up late after crashing out hard (I worked for about 12 hours yesterday and was pretty tired, you can probably tell from my diary entry) and went into where I'm working. Tried to call a bunch of various people to see if they could help me out but no one wants to do any work over here on Sunday.

Instead I ended up doing a few small things, reorganising my trip again and booking myself into a hotel for another two nights. I really hope I fix this tomorrow, I'm getting quite homesick now and want to come home! I haven't really had a day off since I got here either, my weekend wasn't.

In other exciting news, I have reorganised the photo gallery by year. I haven't finished it 100% yet as I can't remember what year some things were, but it's...

Another New Hotel Room

Submitted by TiM on

The last hotel room was nice and flash, this one is very dissapointing. It's a hole in a wall with a bed in it.

I'm still here in the crappy cage, have been for the last 9 hours and I think I'm going to be here a while yet. Yesterday I had a major breakthrough, I came up with a way to fix the problem that worked really well. It's drawback was that it had zero redundancy and we really like redundancy in our network. So I'm still here, techies on the end of the line plugging and unplugging cables, hacking this while trying to make sure the Internet for half of New Zealand doesn't break.

I managed to get out last night though and really enjoy myself, one of my online mates I realised during the week lives in California and he was nice enough to drive the 2...

New Hotel Room

Submitted by TiM on

They moved me to a new hotel room today, it's really nice. It's called the "Vista Suite" and it's got proper fancy things, a massive lounge with a seperate bedroom. Now I'm living in style ladies and gentlemen! The only thing I really don't understand about my new room is this. Yes, my toilet has a telephone. Am I the only one that finds this deeply disturbing?

Managed to go out again last night, it was a bit of a sad attempt though. I got on the wrong subway train, not really a major, I jumped off and got the return train. Which then got delayed in the tunnel for 20 minutes while something happened, I dunno, something broke down or something. Finally I got back to the station to catch the right train, just in time to see the doors of that train close as I rushed out...

So Busy

I have been working flat out here in LA, trying to fix the problem that we've got. Everytime I think I've had a breakthrough it turns out to be bogus.

Once I left here last night I decided I'd better try and at least do something, I'd be pissed with myself (and my job) if I didn't even get out to Hollywood, so I did that last night. Jumped on the subway and off I went.

I got off at the wrong stop though didn't I? Two stops too early in fact. I asked 5 people for directions to "the place with the stars in the ground" 3 of them didn't know where it was or what I ment (Hollyway, stars, ground... It's not that complex is it?) and 2 didn't speak english and all and wanted me to go away. Well, all 5 wanted me to go away I...

Sunny LA

Submitted by TiM on

Well, if I thought I was going to be walking around all day in the sun and happiness, looking at movie stars I was badly mistaken! Instead I have started to feel a little bit like Oscar might, here's my own little cage that I've been working in today.

Here's a cut from an email I sent Sarah yesterday:

So anyway, I made it safe! Customs was really easy to clear, I had my workmate Brent to talk to and the hippy dude who sat next to me on the plane. We were sat in a 3 seater but there was only the two of us. Hippy dude hogged my blanket though and lay across both seats, his head kept rubbing against my leg. It was farking annoying. Then I started farting and he sat up rather quickly. Then I finally got some sleep, which was really good as I...

Made It!

Submitted by TiM on

Hello, I've made it to LA ok! Flight over was good, I had to sit next to some hippie guy though who while nice enough, stole my blanket and tried to lie on me. Kinda annoying. But I got a really good sleep so I was all awake etc when I got here.
Everything is closed in downtown LA on a Sunday afternoon, I went for a walk and didn't find much at all.
I'll post more tomorrow after I've had a proper day here, my laptop is about to go flat and I don't have an adaptor plug (and there's nowhere open to get one!)

Bye Bye New Zealand

Hi People! I fly out today at 7:30pm woohoo!

Bags aren't packed yet either, washing is still drying on the line. Mum thinks I might be cutting it a bit fine but I'll be sweet.

Last few days have been good, Friday night we went out to Wildfire. I had a hell of a time trying to get money for the parking meter, then trying to get the damn thing to accept my money. Eventually though it took it, after I was nearly towed.

Saturday we stood on Queen St for 2 hours and collected money for the Tsunami victims. I collected about $117 and Sarah collected about $260. She kicked my arse!

Last night we went out for Dinner with Kelly and a couple of her friends, then we went to see the Movie Alfie. Not a bad movie either, more of a guy's movie I think than a...
