Weekend in Halifax

Submitted by TiM on

So we had a really good weekend! Sarah headed off on Thursday night, I was sad and stuck at home all alone. Friday was an average day at work, I did the final bits of work on a large project. It got implemented on Saturday so I was nervous all weekend. It's weird being a TC sometimes, you do all the pre-work on something but then it's up to an engineer to do the actual work. I always get nervous that I'll have designed it wrong, or something similar.
The Dell guy also came and replaced my laptop screen, it's back and as good as new.

Saturday morning I was up nice and early (5:30!) to catch The Tube to the Train station. A fairly uneventful ride except for the first 15 minutes when I got on the tube. It just sat at Acton Town for about 15 minutes, no...

Back To London

You'll notice the return of the little icons for each story. If you go back to all the really old stories, they've returned! It's something I'd always missed since I changed the software that runs my Diary, but now thanks to a little module, they're back.

So, login if you haven't already to read this story. Things aren't to well at Vanco!

We had a great weekend up in Halifax, busy all the time, lots of fun. We even had some excitement on the drive back yesterday. I'll write a proper entry tonight.

Poor Laptop, Stupid Virgin

Submitted by TiM on

My poor laptop! I turned it on last night and it had some big ugly lines down the screen. Some part of the LCD display has gone funky, so the whole LCD needs to be replaced.
Thankfully as part of buying a new laptop it's all covered under the one year warranty, as an extra bonus it's even next business day. So tomorrow I will have a technician come and replace it for me.

I wish I could say that VirginMedia was as responsive as Dell.
We've had a fault logged on our phone for the last 4 months because...

Reading Train Diaries Part 2

Submitted by TiM on

I wrote this yesterday on the train out to Reading. It's a bit all over the place, but I might fix it up later. I doubt it though.

Friday night we headed over to Maggie and Andy's for Ruth's farewell dinner. Not really farewell as such, but she's moving out from living with Maggie and Andy into her own apartment. So the deal was this time that we'd all cook instead of Andy. It's only fair really, the amount of yummy stuff he cooks up.
Sarah and I were in charge of doing the staters, Ruth in charge of the mains and the girls in charge of pudding. We all did a fantastic job! Sarah was at boot camp, so I had to make the entrees myself which is always a recipe for something to go horribly, horribly wrong. But I managed to not burn the bread or to catch...

The Reading Train Diaries

Submitted by TiM on

Hello there, I’m on the train out to Reading this morning. I’ve got two meetings out there today, a whole day in Reading. Of course, because I’m wearing my suit, it’s raining. Things are out to get me and there’s no amount of convincing you can do that will make me think otherwise. Especially when it comes to traffic lights changing on me. Though that’s not really a problem here at the moment because we don’t have a car. But if we did have one, it’d be a problem.

We didn’t do much with our weekend, it was miserable and overcast both days. On Sunday we did venture out to Ikea again. The “official” reason for needing to go was that we destroyed the landlord-provided bathmat. Sarah washed it (it said on the label you could) but obviously years of being stood on had taken it’s toll and it flew...

Shine A Light

Submitted by TiM on

I skipped work a bit early yesterday to catch the overland train into central London, I can't tell you how much fun Waterloo station is at 5:45pm on a Friday night! I soon escaped and met up with everyone at the IMax. Everyone being Sarah and Sarah's Auntie, Uncle and Cousins. We saw "Shine A Light" at the Imax theatre and it was truly amazing.

I grew up not really being a Stones fan at all, I didn't dislike them but I didn't really like them that much either. That changed once we arrived here in London, staying with Sarah's Auntie and Uncle I listened to one of their CD's a lot, Stripped by the Stones. Then Sarah's Uncle also lent me "Exile On Main Street" which I listened to and really liked.
So I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, I'd seen a few posters of it...

Books

Submitted by TiM on

I bought the book "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins quite a while ago, I can't even remember when. I read a chapter of it and it sat on my bedside table for ages. When we headed over to Thailand though I grabbed it on the way out the door, thought I'd give it a read to see what I thought of it.

I really enjoyed it, to say the least. It really made me realise I don't believe in God at all, not that I think there was ever really much doubt about that. I read it quite a...

Cease And DeCyst

Submitted by TiM on

Sarah sent me a text saying "Presents!" yesterday, and when I got home she did the "which hand do you want" trick. The first hand I picked was a very cool Oyster Card holder, which I thought was the present and was pretty happy with. The next hand was the real present though, one of the new iPod Nanos. Thankfully not a Pink one but a very cool Silver one. It's very cool and puts my old Philips one to shame.
[edit: Broken link at bottom of story fixed]

Went to the Dr this morning to have this stupid little lump I've had on my back for ages looked at. I've never worried about it, it doesn't seem nasty or change colour or do anything of the things the bad ones are supposed to do. Doesn't hurt to get it looked at though and I might as well make...

The Squatters

Submitted by TiM on

It's been a interesting week! We've had squatters, a nice restaurant dinner and some shopping. So it wasn't really that exciting I guess, apart from maybe the squatters.

we've been back so long that Thailand seems a distant memory. Apart from the extra 5 odd Kg I seem to be carrying. Whoopsie. I've been putting in the extra yards at Karate to try and burn it off. Work has been going really well, it's taken a while but I really feel like I know what I'm doing now 95% of the time. Now I understand everything, I have to get better at it. One step at a time. Hi Frank if you're reading this.

On Sunday there was a knock at the door, it was our neighbour from above. He asked if I could come over the road to help up a lady, she'd fallen down and hurt herself. Odd...

Snow!

Submitted by TiM on

We woke up this morning and the house was quite cold. I got up to make breakfast, looked out the window and it was snowing. Not just a little bit, there was snow coming down from the sky and it'd settled on everything. We went out to our garden (I think the only time we've ever been out there together, we don't visit the little garden much) and then walked down to a small park. We played around in the snow for a bit, still amazed it was actually snowing.
Then it all got a bit to cold, so we came back home and cranked the heat up. We took some photos, which no doubt Sarah will put on Flickr at some stage.

So the fun of Thailand is almost a distant memory! The spider bites have almost disappeared, though you can still see them and they're still quite itchy...
