Bonjour

Submitted by TiM on

Hello! It's been a while since I've updated because (as you might have noticed) I've been moving the website. It's been picked up from New Zealand and plonked down in a Datacentre somewhere in London. Or maybe it's in France, I don't even know where it's hosted. But it's fast, it's cheap and it works well, so here we are on the new server.
There was a bit of a teething problem when I moved our email, I managed to fark up Sarah's email for 12 hours. It's all fixed now and we're moving along nicely. Postfix is fantastic, Exim is poo.

Last Thursday night we went out to the local Gordon Ramsey pub for Anna's birthday. Everyone was there and we had a really good night, the food was really tasty. At the end of the meal the staff brought over a lovely cake and we all did the...

Subway

Submitted by TiM on

Subway is a strange store. I've been going there quite a bit of late in my attempt to loose some poot flab. In the UK they try SO hard to upsell you.
"Do you want a footlong instead?" "No."
"Do you want extra meat?" "No."
"Do you want it toasted?" (they charge £0.20 extra for that) "No."
"You mean you just want it cold?" "Yes, cold thanks."
"You you want a drink and some chips/a cookie?" "No."

The best was a couple of weeks ago though. I got to the sauces bit (no) and said I'd just like salt and pepper. The guy said "We're out of salt and pepper," (they have a canister with it premixed together) "would you just like me to sprinkle the salt on it and then the pepper on it?"

In other news, the server that has been hosting this website (and my email) for...

Not Much

Finally I can crack out the RBF Icon! I'm going to see them on Friday, this'll be the third time I've seen them live. Awesome.

We haven't done much today, I've got the flu which is annoying. It's not really bad though, like it was last time, so I hope to be over it pretty soon. We've spent the day mostly just hanging around, trying to figure out if there's a decent deal to be had for the Easter long weekend. Preferably somewhere in the sun! There doesn't seem to be though, annoyingly.

We went out for dinner last night with Ruth, to the little Thai place we stumbled on a few weeks back. We didn't get there until really late though, by the time we did it was packed with people. We'd booked so we had somewhere to sit, but there was a birthday party on so there were...

Weekend Washing Machine

Submitted by TiM on

Our new washing machine finally arrived this weekend. The landlord has been promising it for a while, he even actually did buy it a month or so back. It's just that he bought it online when it said "In Stock" and they sent him a confirmation email saying it wasn't in stock and they'd get in touch.

Finally they'd confirmed it was coming on Sunday. They made me ring up on Saturday night, after 9pm, to get a confirmation time for the next day. What a fat lot of good that was, my confirmed time was between 2:45pm and 6:45pm, I got a call about 12:30pm saying "We'll be there in 10 minutes mate, you ready?" I wasn't, because I hadn't unplugged the existing one. A quick bit of rushing though and it was all unplugged, ready to be carted away and the new one installed.

At least, that's what...

We're Back, What Time Is It?

Submitted by TiM on

We're back. It sucks to be back. Coming back we left at 6pm US time and got into the UK at 6am. The only problem was the travel time was just 7 hours and only about 3-4 hours sleep. I got home, had a shower, gave Sarah a kiss for her birthday and headed to work. I managed to last most of the day. We're both a lot better today though!

Our last day in New York was spent at the Natural History Museum, which we both really loved. The only problem was we didn't really have enough time there! We were there for about 5 hours I guess, but it really went fast.

Firstly we went into the Butterfly enclosure which was fun, lots of butterflies flapping around everywhere. Then we went and had a look around the African exhibit. Then it was time for Dinosaurs! The dino display...

Brooklyn Bridge and The Empire State Building!

Submitted by TiM on

We got up yesterday (Sunday) morning, looked out the window at the lovely weather and decided this is it! We're going to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.

We jumped on the subway and had to endure a little bit of confusion, we weren't 100% sure that the line we wanted was running properly. A friendly local helped us out though and pointed us in the right direction. Sarah was looking up cool destinations in Brooklyn and we decided later in the afternoon we'd visit the cafe which our guidebook promised us sold beer milkshakes!

We got off at our stop and rather than just walk straight over we thought we'd better get something to eat first off. So we wandered around for a while to find food and stumbled across some very cool buildings that Sarah took pictures of. Annoyingly it started to rain on us, but it was short lived...

Busy Day In NY

Submitted by TiM on

We've had a busy day today! My legs are tired from all the walking we did.
We caught the Metro this morning down to South Ferry station, the last station on the line. That was a fun journey, we'd got on the last carriage of train and had just made ourselves comfortable, when the driver announced that only the front 5 carriages opened when we got to our destination. So at every stop for the next 5 or so we had to run up to the next carriage. Then we'd stop and run up to the next one. We made it though!

We got to the Stanton ferry terminal 2 minutes to late to catch the 11am ferry, so we waited around in the terminal for 25 minutes until the next ferry arrived. We then joined the race to get on the ferry, I'm not quite sure there was a...

New York

Submitted by TiM on

We're in New York! And you know what, it's bloody freezing. We knew it'd be cold, but neither of us were quite prepared for just how cold it would really be. It's only really bad when we're out walking the streets for anymore than about 10 minutes, then your face starts to hurt it's so frozen. It's a good excuse for us to stop into lots of shops though to keep warm.

We flew in last night without too many problems, our flight was totally devoid of people, I'd say the plane was only an 8th full, if even that. The flight was really good though, the staff were friendly and we had excellent entertainment, the one where there's a TV in every seat to keep you amused.

There's a 5 hour time difference between London and NY, so to battle that we stayed awake for the whole time...

It's Melting!

Submitted by TiM on

Made it to work today with no dramas. The Tube seems to have got itself sorted out so it's running (mostly) fine today.
Work is still deserted though, a lot of people have to travel in on overland trains and I think they're still having issues.

There's still snow about, but it's all icy now. Plus the sun's out in full force today, so I think by the end of the day it'll just be a melted, slushy mess. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!
