Kande Beach

Submitted by TiM on

Hello from Kande Beach in Malawi! It's by the side of the Lake, but the Lake is so huge that it feels like we're by the side of the Ocean. I haven't been in yet, I've been a bit too much of a wuss.

Yesterday was Roast Pig day! It was the whole thing though! First we got up nice and early (too bloody early with a hangover from the night before) to see the pig. He was still alive, though he was tied to a stick. Then the locals killed him (very quickly, poor piggy) and then poured boiling water on him to remove all his fluff. We left after that, but an hour later the pig was delivered to the campsite. I then spent half the day helping Colin (our driver) prepare the spit and getting the pig onto it. We light the fire, tied piggy onto the...

Hello from Malawi

Submitted by TiM on

Hello from Malawi! We got in today, a day later than we were supposed to because our poor truck broke down yesterday. Colin our driver had to spend 5-6 hours fixing it, there was some problem with the gears which meant the first gears, 1-4, couldn't be used. A bit of a problem when it comes to going up hills!
We're both well and having a real blast. Malawi thus far is pretty cool, though we haven't seen to much of it. I'm on a per-minute internet connection at the campsite, so that's it for this diary entry. I just got back from seeing a local witchdoctor which was very amusing! More when we get a bit futher South and have a few days of relaxation.

Oh yea, we were also in Zanzibar for a few days. It was very, very awesome. On the second to last night I got...

Relaxing in Tanzania

Submitted by TiM on

Still in Tanzania! Very annoyed about the Ashes, but hey, what can you do? Not much, except be given a lot of grief from the Pommies on the Truck. Thankfully there’s only one that really seems hell bent on reminding me every 30 seconds that we lost. It’s only fair though, I’d be doing the same thing to him if we’d won.

Sarah has uploaded a few (small) photos to Flickr. Be sure to have a look!

We’ve got a “day off” today, that is, we’re not doing anything except relaxing. Most of the rest of the group is currently in the Serengeti doing a game drive, but we opted out of it because we’ve already done a lot of game driving. We actually got a game drive around Crater Lake yesterday anyway as part of the tour, so we didn’t need the extra day. Though it would have...

Tanzania

Submitted by TiM on

Hello from Tanzania. We left Kenya yesterday, after having picked up a bunch of new people from Karen in Kenya. We also had to wave goodbye to a bunch of people too which was a bit sad! Today we're in Arusha, just getting some stuff and doing a bit of shopping.
Lots of people are going to the Serengeti tomorrow morning, but we're not! We'd like to go, but it's very expensive for only 2 game drives and we already saw heaps and heaps of animals on the pre-trip Maasi Mara excursion we did. We get 4 days to chill and relax instead, so that's all good.

Pretty sad about the state of the ashes, but as I write this we haven't actually lost yet. No doubt we will though, sob.

Back in Kenya, A Very Long Update!

Submitted by TiM on

Here we are, back in Karen, a small suburb outside of Nairobi. We've done what's known as The Gorilla Loop, it's the first of four sections of our Overland trip. We've signed up for all four sections, thus why we're doing 90 days, but a lot of poeple have only signed up for particular sections. There's quite a few people we're saying goodbye to today, which is sad, but we're also picking up just as many (and a few more) again for our trip down to Cape Town. That's actually two sections, but most people are doing both. Then there's only about 7 (us included) doing the Cape Town to Jo'Berg bit.

Please forgive what is probably terrible terrible grammer and spelling in this story, it was typed fast as to make the most of my time!

So we've done the Gorilla Loop as it's called, we're a 1/4 of...

Jinja and Whitewater rafting

Submitted by TiM on

Hello from Jinja, "Source of the Nile" in Uganda. We went white water rafting yesterday which was great fun, the perfect thing to do on your 33rd birthday! The only problem was Sarah lost her big toenail, well, it's still hanging on but only just. The driver of our truck also bashed his knee and ankle pretty badly, but he thinks he'll be OK to drive, so that's good. Plus our tour leader can drive as well, though not quite as well on the clutch (Sorry Carol!)

Still having a great time, the Internet is still terribly slow and there's always a queue, so not much time to write diary entries! I wish I'd bought a little laptop along now just to write it up, but never mind.

Mountain Gorillas

Submitted by TiM on

[This was written in Uganda, but never posted because the Internet there basically didn't work!]

Hello from Red Chilli, a campsite in Uganda. It's the day before my birthday and tomorrow promises to be a pretty cool day. We're having a toga party, both to celebrate my birthday and just because we can have a toga party!
It's almost impossible to remember all the places we've been, but I'm going to give it a quick go and see how I get on. The Internet is so slow here that even loading my diary is going to be a real challenge.

The moutain gorilla's were just amazing. We started the day really early, up at 5:30 because we had to get picked up at 6. Or maybe it was 7, either way, it was too early for my liking. There wasn't even any breakfast, just what we'd managed to make the...

Rwanda

Submitted by TiM on

Hello from Rwanda. Today we saw mountain Gorilla's up close. 2 Metres close. Amazing - we are having a blast. This Internet cafe has the most bizzare keyboard ever, so I'm off. But we are safe and well and having the most awesome time.

In Kenya!

Submitted by TiM on

Oh Boy! We're here, it's hard to actually believe. I'm sitting in a Internet Cafe in Karen, a small town just outside of Nairobi. We arrived last night after a nice easy flight and have been taking it really easy all day today. Except for the last 30 minutes, when I realised I didn't have a copy of the receipt for our mini-safari tomorrow, which we need! I've printed it out now though, so it's all good.

The last few days have been a total blur. Well, the last few weeks have even. It's hard to remember just how much stuff has gone on since my last entry. A big work leaving do, which was quite awesome and quite late. I got a really cool pocket knife as a leaving present. Not just a little pussy one, a real serious it-has-20-features one. It's really nice and in my day pack...

Boxes/Busy/Bloody Traffic/Bleep!

Submitted by TiM on

Woah! How times flies. We have ~6 days before we leave and we never come back. We have boxes all over the place at the moment. I've been on the phone this morning, none of the utilities have a "never coming back option" they only have a "moving house" option. I guess, technically, we are moving house.

So Thursday was my second last day at work, very boring. We caught up with Mum and Bill after work and had a lovely Turkish dinner in Tower Hill. All sorts of tasty turkish food and good company, we had a great night catching up with who's doing what, where.

It was a bit miserable leaving the restaurant because it started to pour with rain. My umbrella broke and no one else had one. All part of the fun though as we rushed back to the Aldgate East tube station.

Friday was my...
