South Africa, The Last Leg

Submitted by TiM on

Hello! We're still in SA and still having a great time. It's the last leg of the trip now, from Cape Town to J'Burg. Our last day in Cape Town we went up Table Mountain on the cable car, it was a super clear day and we got some amazing views and photos.

The truck is really strange now, there's just 9 of us instead of 23! So we have heaps of room to spread out. It's also good, because all the muppets have gone and we have 9 people that all get on really well.

Tomorrow (or maybe it's the next day, not exactly sure) we head to Jeffery's Bay, world renouned for it's surfing. And my inability to spell words.

Today we're at the Tube'N'Axe backpackers, in a place called Storm's River. It's lovely, we went for a costal bushwalk this morning and we saw Whales! So cool...

Cape Town, South Africa

Hello from Cape Town, South Africa! It's the last day for most people, there's only 9 of us going up to Jo'berg and of that 9, only 5 will have done the full 90 days. We're hardcore!
The drive from Stellenbosh to Cape Town only took an hour, not very long at all. It's amazing how "normal" everything is now, Fast Internet, coffee, shops, Thai Food etc. It's really good, I think it'd be quite hard for people doing the 90 day trip but starting in Jo'burg and ending in Nairobi.

Sarah's still not feeling all that well, so we went down to the Dr before and now have some antibiotics which will hopefully help her recover faster. She's doing OK though, still up and about, though I'm going to force her to rest again this afternoon. We're in Cape Town for 4 days, we're hoping that's enough time to...

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Hello from Stellenbosch in South Africa! We've made it to pretty much the last country we're going to visit, apart from one that's in the middle of SA that I can't remember the name of right now.
We've had such a good time, sadly our tour leader Carol has to leave us tomorrow, so tonight's her last night. I think it's going to be quite a big one. She's such a lovely person, she's been a great tour leader and we'll both be very sad to see her depart. Colin's (the crazed malarial driver) girlfriend Sam is taking over as our tour leader, we only met her briefly today but she seems really nice too. I think you need a certain personality to lead 20+ people on a truck trip without going criminally insane.

Thus far we haven't really done much in SA. Just a couple of camps. Though last...

Sandboarding, Skydiving, Braai's and some Photos!

Submitted by TiM on

First of all, there's more photos! We've finally had a chance to sit down and upload a few. Check them out! Also, Sarah has updated her blog with some commentry for the pictures, view it right now I tell you!

We're still in Yesterday we went Sandboarding in the morning. For Sarah, that was just like snowboarding but on sand. I opted for the more out-of-control speed version, which was bascially a bit of wood you lay on and slid down the dunes. It was so much fun, I went about 8 or 9 times and amazingly I didnt' wipe out once! A few people did and getting sand in your eyes at 70km an hour (my top speed, measured with a radar gun) wasn't fun apparently.

That afternoon we headed out for Skydiving. I piked out, having done it once before was plenty for me. But Sarah really loved...

Swakopmund, Namibia

Hello from Swakopmund! It's so nice to be in a place for 3 days without moving. We can do some laundry, it seems like months ago we did some. I'm filthy, actually filthy dirty. I don't have any clean shorts! Tomorrow the washing will be open and they're going to get dumped on by 25 people.
Today we saw Seals! Boy they stink like nothing else, but they're fantastic to watch. The sound like sheep, with all the bleeting noises that they make.

We've stayed the last two nights in bushcamps, both of them totally amazing. Last night was probably the coolest though, we pitched our tent in what was almost a little cave. It was nice and cool in the boiling hot sun! It was my cook group's turn to book and we cooked up a real storm of spag bol.

Three nights ago we stayed at Cheetah Park...

In Botswana

Hello from Botswana. We arrived yeseterday in what has to be the hottest day so far! It was really stinking hot, but today seems to be a lot cooler.
It's amazing the difference between Zim and Botswana. Botswana has infastructure, reliable power and Internet that is faster than a snail.

Last night we did a cool boat cruise down the Chobe river. We got right up close to crocodiles and hippos, plus we saw what must have been at least 200 elephants off in the distance. On the way back we saw the most awesome sunset as well.

Tomorrow we're going off on a two day trek of the Okavango Delta which promises to be fun!

Ok, enough Internet. Time to get out and do a quick bit of shopping for tomorrow.

Vic Falls

Submitted by TiM on

Hello from Vic Falls, still in Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls is a pretty amazing place, though the time of year we're here means that it's not really "running" at full steam. But it's still amazing to see. Yesterday we flew over the falls in Microlights, which was the funnest thing ever. You go up in what is essentially a glider with wheels and a propeller at the back and wizz around for 15 minutes. As an added bonus you actually have to go over to Zambia to do it, so we both have another stamp in the passport. Mine of which is rapidly running out of pages!!

The flying was really cool, you get the most amazing open-air wind-in-your-face perspective of everything. We flew over so many animals, Elephants, Crocs, Girrafes, a dead Elephant even. One leg sticking out at an angle.
I'd love to do another Microlight flight, or even...

Bulawayo

We're still in Zimbabwe, though we have left Antelope Park. Yesterday I did two other activities, the first was a bushwalk and the second was a horse ride. The bushwalk was probably my highlight, it was all about the bush and the little insects and trees and those sorts of things. Kind of like an African version of the Bush Tucker Man. Who was always awesome as far as I'm concerned.

The horse ride was pretty cool too, because when you're on horseback you can get right up close to the giraffes and other beasties. Plus the horses pretty much drive themselves. Though I don't like it when they trott, it crushes the ol' meat and two veg.

We're in Bulawayo at the moment on a 3 hour stop for shopping and a bit of free time. I'm going to head back to the truck, because my Internet Time's almost...

Antelope Park, Zimbabwe

Hello everyone! We're in zimbabwe at the moment. In the last week I have kissed a man, dressed up as a woman, then punched (in the face) the same man I kissed. Random huh? Zimbabwe is such a lovely place and it's a real shame that it has such a bad reputation. Everyone is lovely and the 10 billion dollar notes are just hilarious. Though everything's in US dollars now, but you can still buy the old notes for a laugh.

Once we got into Zim we stayed at this awesome place called Bird Park. I loved it because it was full of really exotic, cool birds. They had heaps of different ones, we got photos of most of them so when we get somewhere with Internet that isn't from the stone ages we might upload them.

We also had a big party in Bird Park, which is where Colin...
